How and When Can I Upgrade My AT&T Wireless Phone?

Mobile phones from network carriers are usually tied with contracts ranging from 12 months to 24 months. Because mobile phone producers are releasing new models quickly, the contract may be too long if you want to have trendy phones.

Lucky for you, you can check your account status online to know your eligibility for an upgrade if you are still on contract.

How Do I Check If I Am Eligible for an Upgrade?

  1. Open your browser and go to the AT&T homepage.
  2. Log in to your AT&T account
  3. Go to Account Overview
  4. Open My Wireless section
  5. Scroll down and select your device
  6. Check upgrade status. If you see Ready to upgrade or Upgrade ready, it means you are eligible.

You can only upgrade your wireless phone if you are eligible. Now that you know how to check your eligibility, it's time to learn how to make the upgrade to ensure you don't miss out on what your friends are enjoying.

Everybody loves to be current and not behind in technology. It makes perfect sense why you want to have the latest phone. Maybe you want to enjoy the fantastic features you have read about on that phone or to look classy like your friends. The reasons are endless, but you surely deserve to get that upgrade.

Can I Transfer My Wireless Phone Upgrade Eligibility?

It is possible to have a wireless plan that AT&T no longer offers. Don't worry, you can keep the plan even after upgrading the device. However, if you want to change your current plan or the data amount, you should choose your preferred plan from the list of current wireless plans.

Bear in mind that you can't go back to the old plan. Contact AT&T customer support to check out the latest plans.

You can share wireless phone upgrade eligibility with a different device on your account. You pay a one-time upgrade fee of $45 maximum per device, which is charged to your next bill.

  • You can transfer upgrade eligibility to another line if the line on your account is eligible for an upgrade. Transfer happens only on the same account.
  • You can contact AT&T customer support to transfer your eligibility or visit an AT&T store.
  • The people who can transfer an upgrade are the following; authenticated caller, retail authorized user, and the account owner.
  • Transfer and receiving lines must be of the same device type. For instance, you can transfer your smartphone upgrade to a line with a smartphone but can't transfer it to a line that has a tablet.

What Happens If My Smartphone is Not On the Installment Plan?

When transferring upgrade eligibility to a different line on the same account:

  • The line that is giving up its upgrade must accept installment terms on the line that is receiving the upgrade.
  • Upgrade the device of the receiving line during this transfer process.

Or let's say,

If a father transfers his upgrade eligibility to his daughter's line. The father assumes the remainder of the daughter's installment plan on his line. The daughter upgrades and gets a new smartphone but with a new AT&T installment plan.
